Challenge the Ingredients. Showcase the Skill.

The MRE Challenge brings Culinary Arts students together for a fast-paced team competition unlike a traditional kitchen experience. Working with military Meals Ready to Eat and limited resources, teams must plan, prepare, and present creative dishes while demonstrating culinary skill, sanitation, teamwork, and problem-solving. In partnership with the Massachusetts Army National Guard, the challenge pushes students to think differently, adapt quickly, and make the most of every ingredient.

The MRE Challenge is a hands-on culinary experience developed by SkillsUSA Massachusetts in partnership with the Massachusetts Army National Guard. First held in 2019, the event allows Culinary Arts students to apply their training in an unconventional setting, using military Meals Ready to Eat as the foundation for original dishes while working within a limited set of ingredients and resources.

Teams of three student chefs receive a randomly selected assortment of MRE packets and are challenged to transform what they are given into a complete presentation. After time to plan, teams prepare an appetizer, entrée, dessert, and beverage before presenting their finished dishes to a panel of judges. Throughout the challenge, students are evaluated on areas including sanitation and safety, organization, proper portioning and presentation, quality, taste, texture, creativity, and their ability to work effectively as a team.

More than a culinary competition, the MRE Challenge asks students to adapt, problem-solve, and make thoughtful decisions under pressure. Working with unfamiliar ingredients and unique preparation methods encourages competitors to think beyond a traditional kitchen environment while demonstrating the technical skills, teamwork, and creativity they have developed through their career and technical education programs.
