The SmartStart Summit is a one-day conference designed primarily for first-year SkillsUSA Massachusetts members to explore the organization, build connections, and discover the opportunities available throughout their SkillsUSA experience. Through interactive sessions, activities, and peer-led learning, freshmen gain a stronger understanding of SkillsUSA while developing confidence, communication skills, and a sense of belonging within their chapters and the statewide organization.

Throughout the conference, students rotate through engaging sessions and facilitator booths led by experienced upperclassmen and SkillsUSA leaders. These experiences introduce members to SkillsUSA programs, leadership opportunities, career readiness, and ways to become more involved while giving student facilitators the opportunity to strengthen their own presentation, teamwork, communication, and leadership skills.

SmartStart is designed to help new members begin their SkillsUSA journey with a strong foundation. Freshmen leave with new connections, a clearer understanding of what SkillsUSA can offer them, and greater confidence to participate throughout the year, while upperclassmen have the opportunity to lead by example and help welcome the next generation of SkillsUSA Massachusetts members.

  1. Be a freshman student.
  2. Be a registered SkillsUSA member.
  3. Attend the SmartStart Summit.
  4. Participate in all SmartStart workshop booths during the conference.

Important: The Trailblazer Award is a participant recognition for eligible freshman members. Student Facilitators have a separate recognition process based on their facilitation and presentation skills.

02
CREDENTIALING OPPORTUNITY
The Trailblazer Award

The SmartStart Trailblazer Award recognizes freshman SkillsUSA members who fully participate in the SmartStart Summit experience.

By attending the conference and completing each workshop booth, freshmen are introduced to the programs, opportunities, resources and experiences available to them as members of SkillsUSA Massachusetts.

Freshman members who meet all Trailblazer Award qualifications earn recognition for completing the full SmartStart experience.

To earn the Trailblazer Award: students must be freshman SkillsUSA members, attend the SmartStart Summit and participate in every workshop booth.

Facilitator Awards

01
AWARDS & RECOGNITION
Facilitator Recognition Opportunities

Student Facilitators have the opportunity to receive recognition for the skills they demonstrate while leading their assigned SmartStart workshop booth.

Recognition focuses on how effectively facilitators communicate, engage freshman participants, work together as a team and transform their assigned SkillsUSA topic into an informative and memorable experience.

Recognition: Facilitator and booth recognition may be presented during the SmartStart Closing Session based on demonstrated facilitation skills and the overall quality of the workshop experience.

02
FACILITATION SKILLS
What Facilitators Are Evaluated On

Facilitators should be prepared to demonstrate strong leadership and presentation skills throughout each SmartStart workshop rotation.

  • Clear and confident communication
  • Strong presentation and facilitation skills
  • Accurate knowledge of the assigned SkillsUSA topic
  • Creativity and quality of the booth experience
  • Meaningful audience participation and engagement
  • Teamwork and collaboration
  • Professionalism and preparedness
  • Positive peer leadership
  • Effective use of activities, displays, demonstrations or other interactive elements
03
LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT
The Facilitator Opportunity

Serving as a SmartStart Student Facilitator gives upperclassman SkillsUSA members the opportunity to practice leadership by helping welcome and guide freshman members through their first major SkillsUSA experience.

Facilitators are responsible for taking ownership of an assigned topic, developing an engaging workshop booth and repeatedly presenting that information to freshman groups throughout the Summit.

  • Practice public speaking and presentation skills
  • Develop confidence communicating with groups
  • Strengthen teamwork and collaborative planning
  • Build organization and preparation skills
  • Practice creativity and problem solving
  • Serve as a positive peer leader for new SkillsUSA members
  • Strengthen knowledge of SkillsUSA programs and opportunities

Your role matters: Facilitators help shape a freshman member's first impression of SkillsUSA Massachusetts and have the opportunity to demonstrate leadership in a real conference environment.

04
IMPORTANT DISTINCTION
Facilitator Awards vs. Trailblazer Award

Student Facilitators and freshman participants have different recognition opportunities during the SmartStart Summit.

Facilitators may receive recognition based on the quality of their facilitation, presentation, teamwork, leadership, creativity and participant engagement.

The SmartStart Trailblazer Award, however, is specifically for eligible freshman SkillsUSA members who attend the Summit and participate in every workshop booth.

Student Facilitators do not receive the Trailblazer Award. Their recognition is earned through the facilitation and leadership skills they demonstrate during SmartStart.
